SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts scored two first period goals en route to a 2-0 non-conference victory over Vermont tonight in college hockey action at the Springfield Civic Center.

Junior Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) opened the scoring for the Minutemen just 1:11 into the game when he scored in low after intercepting a clearing pass. It was Turner's team-leading fifth goal of the season.

UMass extended its lead to 2-0 at the 5:57 mark of the first period when senior Martin Miljko (Etobicoke, Ontario) scored at the tail end of a power play. Miljko fired a one-timer from the blue line to give the Minutemen a two-goal lead. Senior Toni S?derholm (Helsinki, Finland) and freshman Greg Mauldin (Holliston, Mass.) assisted on the goal.

Both goaltenders dominated the remainder of the game to keep the score 2-0. Massachusetts senior goaltender Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) made 26 saves for his fourth career shutout and first of the season, while Vermont goaltender Shawn Conschafter made 26 saves.

The victory improves Massachusetts to 5-6-0 overall, while the loss drops Vermont to 1-6-1 overall.

Massachusetts returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 24, in a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game at Dartmouth.
