#12/12 Maine Defeats UMass Hockey 6-2
Nov. 19, 2004
ORONO, Maine - John Ronan scored two goals and Jon Jankus had three assists as Maine used a three-goal second period to push past the UMass hockey team 6-2 on Friday night at Alfond Arena.
UMass was led by freshman P.J. Fenton (Longmeadow, Mass.) who tallied two goals in the game giving him a team-leading eight on the season.
Fenton's efforts were not enough, however, as a stingy Maine defense held tight on the Minutemen. Maine outshot UMass 37-to-12 in the game including a 16-to-1 margin in the third period.
The Black Bears (8-6-0, 4-3-0 HEA) took control of the game in the second period scoring three goals to jump ahead 4-2. Ronan scored in the fourth minute of the period to tie the game at 2-2, while Josh Soares sent home a wrister at the 8:06 mark to put Maine ahead again. Keenan Hopson scored his second goal of the season at the 16:29 mark giving Maine the 4-2 lead. Jankus and Bret Tyler each posted two assists in the period.
Maine opened the scoring as the Black Bears jumped to a 1-0 lead 8:28 into the first period when Brent Shepard's shot found home. Shepard picked up the loose puck wristing it into the top right of the goal past Winer's outstretched glove. The tally was his fifth of the season.
UMass (6-5-1, 3-3-1 HEA) scored at the 16:41 mark of the opening period to knot the score at 1-1. Fenton scored for the seventh time this season on a put-back from a deflected Matt Anderson (West Islip, N.Y.) shot. The play was set up by David Leaderer (Rochester, N.Y.) who intercepted a pass at center ice and sent the puck towards the Maine goal.
Fenton gave the Minutemen a 2-1 lead just under two minutes into the second period when he intercepted a deflected pass putting it past UM keeper Jimmy Howard.
Maine finished the scoring with goals from Ronan and Brent Shepheard in the third period.
UMass returns to action on Tuesday when the Minutemen travel to Vermont. The game is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start in Gutterson Fieldhouse.
