SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior forward Martin Miljko (Etobicoke, Ontario) scored two goals and two assists and freshman Greg Mauldin (Holliston, Mass.) scored two goals and an assist to lead the University of Massachusetts to a 6-5 victory over Connecticut in college hockey action tonight at the Springfield Civic Center.

Massachusetts opened the scoring 4:25 into the first period when sophomore Thomas P?ck (Klagenfurt, Austria) netted his fourth goal of the season with a deflection in the slot. Freshman Sean Regan (South Boston, Mass.) took the shot from the point. Miljko also assisted on the goal.

The Minutemen extended thier lead to 2-0 early in the second period. Milkjo scored off a one-timer on the power play. Seniors Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) and Toni S?derholm (Helsinki, Finland) assisted on the goal. Miljko netted his second of the game off a rebound of a Kelly Sickavish (North Vancouver, British Columbia) shot at the 14:29 mark. Mauldin also assisted on the goal.

Massachusetts made the score 4-0, when Mauldin scored from the slot on the power play. Miljko and Turner assisted on the goal. Connecticut cut the Minuteman lead to 4-1 late in the second period when Mike Boylan scored from the slot. Boylan netted his second of the game 6:30 into the third period to cut the UMass lead to 4-2.

Mauldin scored a shorthanded goal at the 11:08 mark of the third period. UConn freshman Matt Grew scored a power-play goal less than a minute later to make the score 5-3. The Minutemen scored a power-play goal at the 15:09 mark to make the score, 6-3. Junior Samuli Jalkanen (Helsinki, Finland) scored his first of the season with assists from sophomore Nick Kuiper (Beaconsfield, Quebec) and senior Darcy King (Barrie, Ontario). UConn scored two goals in the final four minutes, including one with the goaltender pulled to make the final 6-5.

 

 

UMass senior goaltender Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) made 11 saves while allowing one goal through the first two periods before being replaced by freshman Tim Warner (Waltham, Mass.) at the start of the third. UConn goaltender Artie Imbriano made 24 saves in the losing effort.

Massachusetts returns to action on Friday, Nov. 16, when it plays at Hockey East rival UMass Lowell.
