#20 Hockey Defeats Boston University 5-3 On Will Ortiz Game-Winner

BOSTON - Will Ortiz score the game-winning goal with just under seven minutes to play and P.J. Fenton added an empty-netter for insurance as the #20 UMass hockey team defeated Boston University for the first-time ever at Agganis Arena on Friday night.
Five different skaters scored goals improving UMass to 37-0-1 over the last 38 games where the Minutemen score four-or-more goals. The win improves UMass to 4-2-2 overall and 2-1-2 in Hockey East. Boston University falls to 2-5-1 overall and 2-2-0 in league action.
The Minutemen will face UMass Lowell on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Tsongas Arena in Lowell.
The scoring started quickly in the game as Pete MacArthur tallied the Terriers' first goal of the game just 33 seconds into play. UMass senior captain Mike Kostka answered just under three minutes later to even things at 1-1 on the power play for his first goal of the season.
UMass closed out the first period when Topher Bevis scored his first goal of the season, second of his career, with 3:05 remaining in the frame to take a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.
Boston University evened things on the power play in the second period when Bryan Ewing scored at the 7:38 mark and the two teams fought through the remainder of the period without any further scoring.
Three UMass goals were the story of the third period as Chase Langeraap netted his first collegiate goal giving UMass a 3-2 lead nearly seven minutes in on another power play goal. The Terriers again equalized when MacArthur scored his second goal of the game almost two minutes later.
With just 6-minutes, 46-seconds to go, Ortiz scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season to put the Minutemen ahead for good. Boston University pulled keeper Brett Bennett and UMass faced the extra-man attack for the final moments, but the defense stood tall and Fenton was able to capitalize with his empty-net goal for insurance with 31 seconds remaining.
Paul Dainton played between the pipes for UMass making 26 saves including 14 in the second period. Bennett finished the night with 23 saves - 12 in the first period.
Langeraap finished the night with a goal and an assist for UMass, while fellow freshman added a pair of assists giving him a team high seven helpers and eight total points.
MacArthur led BU with two goals and an assist, while Ewing had a goal and an assist and Chris Higgins added two assists.
