AMHERST, Mass. -- Junior Stephen Werner (Chevy Chase, Md.) scored a short-handed goal with 1:51 left in overtime to give the UMass hockey team a 2-1 win over St. Francis Xavier in an exhibition game at the Mullins Center Practice Rink tonight. Werner also had an assist on the Minutemen's first goal of the game. There were 36 total penalties in the game and 18 combined power-plays.

UMass got on the board first on the power-play just 4:46 into the first period. Sophomore Kevin Jarman (Aurora, Ontario) recorded the goal off assists from Werner and redshirt-sophomore Matt Anderson (West Islip, N.Y.). St. Francis Xavier had chances to tie with four power-plays in the period and eight shots on goal, but UMass senior Tim Warner (Waltham, Mass.) stood his ground in net. There were 16 penalties alone in the first period, eight on each side.

The second period started off just as wide open as both teams were flying up and down the ice. Warner was taken out and replaced by junior Gabe Winer (Stoughton, Mass.) mid-way through the period after making 10 saves. Winer was tested early and often and the X-Men were able to beat him with a power-play goal with 5:18 left in the second. Darren McMillian got a rebound in front of the net and stuffed it past Winer.

The score remained deadlocked at one through the third period and into overtime. Freshman David Leaderer (Rochester, N.Y.) was called for an obstruction penalty at 2:21 of the extra session and the X-Men quickly got off two shots. Winer, however, stopped them both. 30 seconds later, senior Dusty Demianiuk (Franklin, Mass.) got the puck at center ice and passed to Anderson. Anderson then sent in Werner down the right side. Werner ripped a wrist shot over the glove hand of SFX goalkeeper Michael Mole for the game-winner.

UMass was out-shot 30-28 in the game and was 1-for-7 on the power-play. The X-Men were 1-for-11 with the extra skater. Winer ended up with 19 saves for the Minutemen, while Mole had 26 on the other side.

Massachusetts will open up the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 9. The Minutemen will host Clarkson at 7:00 p.m. and it is Operation 8K. Come be a part of history as UMass tries to sell out the Mullins Center. For ticket information, please contact 1-866-UMASS-TIX.
