Hockey Falls to No. 10 Maine, 7-0

ORONO, Maine - Seven different players scored goals to lead the University of Maine to a 7-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts in Hockey East action tonight at Alfond Arena.

No. 10 Maine opened the scoring 10:31 into the first period when Francis Nault scored off a centering feed from Lucas Lawson to finish off a Black Bear offensive rush. Martin Kariya began the play with a pass from the neutral zone. Maine increased its lead to 2-0 when Lawson scored off a feed from Kariya at the 17:14 mark of the first period. Niko Dimitrakos also assisted on the goal.

The Black Bears took a 3-0 lead 9:01 into the second period when Gray Shaneberger scored off a rebound of a Peter Metcalf shot. Robert Liscak was credited with the other assist on the goal. Maine added another second period goal when Ben Murphy knocked in a loose puck from a scramble in front of the Minuteman net. Metcalf and Paul Falco assisted on the goal at the 11:32 mark.

Falco scored an unassisted goal 9:37 into the third period to give Maine a 5-0 lead. The Black Bears added another goal less than three minutes later when Metcalf skated in from the right point and fired a shot through a screen that found the back of the net. Todd Jackson and Liscak assisted on the goal. Colin Shields netted a power-play goal at the 14:08 mark to make the score 7-0. Jackson and Tom Reimann assisted on the goal.

Senior goaltender Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) made 32 saves for the Minutemen, while Mike Morrison and Matt Yeats combined to make 12 saves for the Black Bears. The victory improves Maine to 19-9-6 overall and 13-5-4 in Hockey East, while the loss drops Massachusetts to 8-22-2 overall and 3-17-2 in Hockey East.

Massachusetts returns to action Tuesday night, Feb. 26, for a 7:00 p.m. league game with New Hampshire at the William D. Mullins Center.
