Hockey Falls to No. 10 Maine, 7-1

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine scored six unanswered goals to break open a 1-1 first period tie en route to a 7-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts in Hockey East action tonight at Alfond Arena.

No. 10 Maine opened the scoring 6:14 into the first period when John Ronan scored off a feed from Paul Falco. Michael Schutte also assisted on the goal. Massachusetts responded quickly, scoring a goal just 16 seconds later. Freshman Peter Trovato (North Attleboro, Mass.) netted his fourth career goal when he scored from the slot off a feed from freshman Greg Mauldin (Holliston, Mass.).

The Black Bears regained the lead when defenseman Peter Metcalf scored off a Minuteman turnover in their own zone at the 14:05 mark. Maine extended its lead to 3-1 when Colin Shields scored at the 18:51 mark of the first period. Shields deflected in a shot from Francis Nault. Matt Greyeyes also assisted on the goal.

Maine took a three-goal lead when Ben Murphy scored on a rebound of a Falco shot at the 9:45 mark of the second period. Ronan was also credited with an assist on the goal. The Black Bears extended their lead to 5-1 when Lucas Lawson scored his 10th goal of the season at the 14:39 mark. Niko Dimitrakos and Nault assisted on the goal.

Both teams changed goaltenders to start the third period. Freshman Tim Warner (Waltham, Mass.) made 22 saves and allowed five goals in two periods of work for the Minutemen, while Mike Morrison made 12 saves and allowed one goal for Maine. The Black Bears made the final score 7-1 with two third period goals.

The victory improves Maine to 18-9-6 overall and 12-5-4 in Hockey East, while the loss drops Massachusetts to 8-21-2 overall and 3-16-2 in Hockey East.

Massachusetts returns to action tomorrow night, Feb. 23, for the second game of the weekend series with Maine. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
