LOWELL, Mass. - Massachusetts and UMass-Lowell skated to a 3-3 tie this evening in Hockey East action before 6,048 fans at the Tsongas Arena. The Minutemen, who led 3-0 entering the third period, survived a ferocious attack from the River Hawks to hang on for a much-needed conference point. This was the seventh time that the Minutemen have gone into overtime, including six in conference play. They own a 1-4-2 record in the extra frame.

Sophomore Mike Warner (Waltham, Mass.) got the Minutemen on the board early when he netted his first goal of the year just 2:11 into the game. The goal was unassisted. UMass increased its lead to 2-0 when freshman Dusty Demianiuk (Franklin, Mass.) netted his first of the season. Senior Toni Soderholm (Helsinki, Finland) was credited with an assist on the tally.

Freshman Tim Vitek (Dresden, Ontario) gave the Minutemen a 3-0 advantage when he scored his third goal of the season at the 10:11 mark of the second period. Soderholm and freshman Justin Rafferty (Clifton Park, N.Y.) each picked up an assist.

The River Hawks got on the board just 44 seconds into the third period when Ed McGrane beat UMass senior goaltender Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.). Josh Reed and Stephen Slonina each picked up an assist. After Reed's third goal 12 minutes later got the River Hawks within a score, Anders Strome delivered the equalizer with just 30 seconds remaining and their goalie pulled. Chris Gustafson and Slonina picked up assists.

Johnson, who ended up with 39 saves on the evening, made five big ones in overtime preserving the win. Lowell goaltender Cam McCormick made just 11 saves as the Minutemen could only muster 14 shots.

With Merrimack's upset of No. 7 Maine at home this evening, the Minutemen now find themselves two points behind the Warriors for the eighth and final Hockey East playoff spot.

UMass returns to action Friday night at the Mullins Center for an exhibition game against the United States National Development Team. The puck will drop at 7:00 p.m.
