BOSTON, Mass. - Freshman Greg Mauldin (Holliston, Mass.) scored two goals, but it was not enough as No. 9 Boston University defeated the University of Massachusetts, 4-2, in Hockey East action this evening at Walter Brown Arena.

Mauldin gave the Minutemen a 1-0 lead when he stole the puck from a Terrier defender behind the net, circled around the cage and stuffed it by netminder Jason Tapp at the 11:59 mark of the first period. The unassisted goal was his 10th of the season. He becomes the first UMass player to break the 20-point plateau with the score. Less than three minutes later, Brian McConnell tied the game for the Terriers. Jack Baker and Chris Dyment were credited with assists on McConnell's ninth tally of the season.

Mauldin regained the lead for the Minutemen just 1:16 into the second period when he picked up a loose puck in the Terrier zone and slid a shot by Tapp. Sophomore Nick Kuiper (Beaconsfield, Quebec) and junior Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) picked up assists on the goal. With the score, Mauldin took over the team scoring lead from Turner. That was the last time the Minutemen would be in front, however, as the Terriers closed out the period with three unanswered goals and held the Minutemen scoreless in the third preserving the win. Mike Pandolfo scored the equalizer for the Terriers and later assisted on Mark Mullen's game-winner.

Senior Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) made 26 saves for the Minutemen, while Tapp stopped 19 shots for Boston University.

After Merrimack's 5-2 loss to Northeastern this evening, UMass remains one point behind the Warriors for the final Hockey East playoff spot. Massachusetts falls to 8-20-1 overall and 3-15-1 in Hockey East, while the Terriers improve to 18-7-2 overall and 11-5-2 in Hockey East.

The Minutemen will take on Lowell tomorrow evening in a 7:00 p.m. game at the Tsongas Arena. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports New England.
