Feb. 5, 2005
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts (11-16-2, 5-11-2 Hockey East) defeated Merrimack College on Saturday night by the score of 3-1 for its first road win of the season. With the victory, UMass won the season series with the Warriors 2-1 (8-2, 2-5, 3-1) and got its first victory since Dec. 30 vs. Nebraska-Omaha.
After a scoreless first period, UMass' Craig MacDonald opened the scoring 1:24 into the second with a power play tally, assisted by Matt Burto and P.J. Fenton. The goal was the senior's first of the season and ninth of his career.
Merrimack came back to tie the game at 12:22 with a goal by Rob LaLonde, but the Minutemen got the last word in the period when Tim Vitek connected on a pass by captain Stephen Werner for the go-ahead goal. Kevin Jarman also assisted on the goal.
That goal turned out to be the gamewinner for UMass, but the scoring continued just 28 seconds into the third when MacDonald's line struck again. This time Burto netted his sixth goal of the season for the 3-1 lead, assisted by Fenton and MacDonald. That would close out the scoring for the game.
Shots were 27-25 in favor of Merrimack. UMass was 1-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. Gabe Winer made 15 saves through 26:50 of play before Tim Winer relieved him and made 11 saves for the win.
The Minutemen will be back in action next week when they play a weekend series vs. No. 7 New Hampshire. UMass goes to Durham on Friday and hosts the Wildcats on Saturday night at the Mullins Center.
