Hockey Falls to Providence College, 3-2

AMHERST, Mass. - Providence defenseman Regan Kelly scored two goals, including the game-winner in the third period as Providence defeated the University of Massachusetts, 3-2, in Hockey East action tonight at the William D. Mullins Center.
Providence opened the scoring at the 14:04 mark of the second period when Peter Fregoe scored just after a power play had expired. Fregoe buried a feed from Jon DiSalvatore to give the Friars a 1-0 lead. Stephen Wood was also credited with an assist. Massachusetts tied the game less than a minute later when freshman Josh Hanson (Medford, Mass.) scored on a backhand after being sent in alone by freshman Sean Regan (South Boston, Mass.). Senior goaltender Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) picked up his first career assist on the goal. The goal was Hanson's third in four games with the Minutemen.
Providence regained the lead 26 seconds later when Regan Kelly put home a Drew Omicioli centering pass. Shawn Weiman was also credited with an assist on the goal. The Friars extended their lead to 3-1 just under three minutes into the third period when Kelly netted his second of the game. The goal was assisted by DiSalvatore and Jeff Mason.
The Minutemen got to within one when Regan scored a four-on-four goal off a feed from senior captain Toni S?derholm (Helsinki, Finland) at the 4:01 mark. Hanson also assisted on the goal, which was the second of Regan's career.
Johnson made 34 saves in the net for the Minutemen, while Nolan Schaefer made 28 saves for the Friars. The victory improves Providence to 13-13-3 overall and 8-8-1 in Hockey East, while the loss drops Massachusetts to 8-19-1 overall and 3-14-1 in Hockey East.
Massachusetts returns to action on Friday, Feb. 8, when it takes on Hockey East rival Boston University at Walter Brown Arena. The game is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
