AMHERST, Mass. - Boston College freshman Ryan Shannon scored 1:12 into overtime to lift the Eagles to a 3-2 victory over the University of Massachusetts in Hockey East action tonight at the William D. Mullins Center. Shannon scored off a feed from Dave Spina, who stole the puck in the right corner.

Boston College opened the scoring when Spina fired home a wrist shot at the 12:22 mark of the first period. Spina controlled a Minuteman turnover in the neutral zone and skated in before shooting top corner. Freshman Ned Havern was credited with an assist on Spina's ninth goal of the season.

Massachusetts evened the score just 1:12 into the second period when freshman Josh Hanson (Medford, Mass.) scored on a rebound. Hanson knocked in a loose puck from just outside the crease to tie the game, 1-1. Senior Toni S?derholm (Helsinki, Finland) and sophomore defenseman Nick Kuiper (Beaconsfield, Quebec) assisted on the goal. The goal was the second in three games for Hanson, who has recorded at least a point in all three games with the Minutemen.

Massachusetts took the lead when freshman Greg Mauldin (Holliston, Mass.) scored on a breakaway at the 10:28 mark off a feed from freshman Tim Vitek (Dresden, Ontario). Mauldin skated in alone before firing a wrist shot just under the crossbar for his ninth goal of the season.
