#15 UMass Lowell Takes 3-1 Win Over #9 Mass Attack

LOWELL, Mass. - Maury Edwards scored on a third-period power play and Mark Roebothan added an insurance emtpy net goal in the final 17 seconds of play as No. 15 UMass Lowell defeated the No. 9 UMass Hockey team 3-1 on Saturday night at Tsongas Arena. The scoring capped a three-goal stretch to end the game after the Minutemen jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Jordan Virtue tally in the second period. UMass (9-7-5, 4-6-4 HEA) will host Vermont next Friday and Saturday in the Mullins Center. Both games are set for 7 p.m. face-offs.
After a scoreless first period, Virtue scored his second goal of the season midway through the second period with assists credited to Brian Keane and David Leaderer. Virtue's shot was the first even strength shot of the night for UMass who had 12 to that point all on the power play. Despite having six power play chances for the game, the Minutemen were unable to capitalize on any.
Virtue's goal came on a wrist shot from the right faceoff dot that hit Hamilton and trickled into the net.
The River Hawks tied the game just as the period came to a close as Kory Falite scored his ninth goal of the season when he roofed a wrist shot over UMass goalie Paul Dainton's right shoulder.
The River Hawks (11-6-4, 6-6-4 HEA) took the lead in the third period after the Minutemen took a penalty with eight minutes to play. Edwards took a pass from Ben Holmstrom (two assists for the night) and snapped a shot that beat Dainton top-corner. The Minutemen tried desperately to tie the score in the last minute but the River Hawks scored Roebothan's empty net goal to secure the victory.
UML finished the night with a 28-to-21 shot advantage including a 13-to-4 edge in the third period. Paul Dainton made 25 saves between the pipes for UMass, while Nevin Hamilton stopped 20 shots.
UMass was 0-for-6 on the power play, while the River Hawks were 2-for-5. The UMass penalty kill team had stopped 14-of-15 opponent power play chances before UMass Lowell converted on Edwards' goal.
