AMHERST, Mass. - Darren Haydar scored a pair of goals to lead No. 4 New Hampshire to a 5-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts in Hockey East action tonight at the William D. Mullins Center.

New Hampshire opened the scoring just 29 seconds into the game when Darren Haydar scored his 20th goal of the the season. Steve Saviano and Kevin Truelson assisted on the goal. The Wildcats extended their lead to 2-0 when Colin Hemingway scored at the 11:24 mark while cutting through the slot. Lanny Gare and Josh Prudden assisted on the goal.

Following a scoreless second period, Massachusetts cut the New Hampshire lead in half when junior Jimmy Callahan (Lexington, Mass.) finished off a three-on-none rush with a goal just under the crossbar at the 4:29 mark. Juniors J.R. Zavisza (Suffield, Conn.) and Darcy King (Barrie, Ontario) assisted on the goal.

New Hampshire responded less than two minutes later when Haydar netted his second of the game. The power-play goal was assisted by Hemingway. The Wildcats extended their lead to 4-1 when Tim Horst scored a shorthanded goal on a rebound of a Gare shot. Prudden gave New Hampshire a 5-1 lead when he banked in a goal off a Minuteman defenseman at the 11:33 mark.

Senior Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) finished the game with 25 saves in the net for Massachusetts, while New Hampshire goaltender Michael Ayers made 26 saves. The two goals moved Haydar, a Hobey Baker Award candidate, into fifth on New Hampshire's all-time career scoring list with 194 points and fourth on the career goals list with 92.

The victory improves New Hampshire to 16-4-2 overall and 8-2-2 in Hockey East, while the loss drops Massachusetts to 7-15-1 overall and 2-10-1 in Hockey East. Massachusetts returns to action tomorrow night when it travels to New Hampshire for a 7:00 p.m. rematch.
