AMHERST, Mass. - Massachusetts fell to No. 15/15 Maine on Saturday night by the score of 5-2 in front of 4,583 fans at the Mullins Center. The Minutemen (10-12-2, 4-7-2 Hockey East) surrendered three unanswered goals in the final 30 minutes of play for the loss. Four UMass rookies registered points in the win, including the goals by David Leaderer and Zech Klann.

The Black Bears opened up the scoring at 5:05 of the first with Bret Tyler taking a pass in front of UMass' Gabe Winer (Stoughton, Mass.) and beating him inside the post. The goal was assisted by Mike Hamilton and Derek Damon.

Maine was afforded three consecutive power plays in the first and was able to open up a two-goal lead on the third 5-on-4 when Greg Moore collected a Keenan Hopson rebound and snuck it past Winer.

Down 2-0, the Minutemen were able to test out their own power play and converted at 15:43 to make it a 2-1 game. David Leaderer (Rochester, N.Y.) collected a pass from Dan Gordon (Lynnfield, Mass.) and beat Jim Howard 5-hole with a backhand shot. P.J. Fenton (Longmeadow, Mass.) also assisted on the goal.

Massachusetts was unable to tie the game on a late power play, so the teams went into the locker rooms with the 2-1 score.

With a lot of traffic in front of the Black Bear net, UMass rookie Zech Klann (Pottstown, Pa.) was able to connect and made it a 2-2 game at 6:30 of the middle period. Klann's second career goal was assisted by Peter Trovato (North Attleboro, Mass.) and Jeff Lang (Westwood, Mass.).

Sean Regan (South Boston, Mass.), who played in his first game of the 2004-05 season on Saturday, was called for both roughing and a cross check (contact to the head) at the 10-minute mark. Maine's Tyler netted his second goal of the game during the first two minutes of the power play, assisted by Troy Barnes at 10:33. UMass was able to fight off the second power play to keep the score at 3-2.

The Black Bears regained a two-goal lead at 15:46 with a shorthanded goal by Michel Léveillé. Léveillé skated into the UMass zone and beat defenseman Mike Kostka (Ajax, Ont.) for the clean shot, assisted by John Ronan.

Senior goaltender Tim Warner (Waltham, Mass.) was in net for the third period, making his first appearance between the pipes since Nov. 23 at Vermont.

Off a turnover by UMass in the offensive zone, Maine capitalized on a 3-on-1 and made it 5-2 when Keith Johnson scored at 2:23. Johnson's goal was assisted by Tom Zabkowicz and Mike Hamilton. That closed out the scoring for the remainder of the game.

Warner stopped eight shots in the final 20 minutes of play. Winer made 23 through the second period. Jim Howard made xxx for Maine.

UMass was 1-for-3 on the power play; Maine was 2-for-7.
