NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts hockey team skated to a 3-3, overtime tie with Hockey East foe Merrimack, this evening at the Volpe Center.

The Minutemen got on the board first when freshman Greg Mauldin (Holliston, Mass.) beat Merrimack netminder Joe Exter at the 5:08 mark of the first period. Freshman Craig MacDonald (Canton, Mass.) and junior Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) each picked up an assist. The goal, which was the eighth of the season for Mauldin, was the lone tally of the first period.

In the second stanza, the Minutemen increased their lead to 2-0 when freshman Sean Regan (South Boston, Mass.) notched his first collegiate goal just ten seconds after the face-off. MacDonald and junior Jimmy Callahan (Lexington, Mass.) were credited with assists on the power-play goal. Merrimack scored twice later in the period on goals by Ryan Kiley and Anthony Aquino to tie the game.

In the third period, Turner received a Mauldin pass short-handed and slid it by Exter to regain the lead for the Minutemen at the 4:02 mark. It was the 10th goal of the season for Turner. Six minutes later, Merrimack tied the game for good on a goal by Ryan Cordeiro.

In overtime, Callahan had a goal called back by the officials with 47 seconds remaining just moments after they ruled it a score.

In net, senior Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) made 22 saves for the Maroon and White, while Exter stopped 30 shots for Merrimack.

The Minutemen are now 7-13-1 overall this season and 2-8-1 in Hockey East, while Merrimack is 7-12-2 overall, 2-7-2 in Hockey East. The two teams will play tomorrow evening in a 7:00 p.m. game at the William D. Mullins Center.
