Ryan Miller, former head coach at Culver Military Academy, joined the UMass hockey staff in the fall of 2013. Miller, a 2003 graduate of the University of Vermont, will begin his third season as an assistant coach for the Minutemen in 2015-16.
Miller completed his second season as a part of the Culver hockey program in 2012-13 and led the Prep squad to a #10 national ranking with a record of 28-11-3 in his first campaign as head coach. The previous year, he served as the head coach of the U16 team, guiding the Eagles to #11 national ranking with a 30-9-4 record.
Prior to his time at Culver, Miller was the head coach for Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, N.H from 2007-2011. During his tenure at Kimball Union, Miller rebuilt the Wildcats from a bottom-tiered team to a New England contender. Under Miller, the Wildcats captured a Lakes Region title, a Belmont Hill-Nichols Holiday Tournament title, a Piatelli/Simmons New England Championship, a NEPSHC East regular season title and a berth in the Elite 8 Playoffs; including a record of 70-30-7 in his last three seasons. In his time at Kimball Union and Culver, Miller recruited and coached several student-athletes who continued on to play collegiate hockey at the Division I level, as well as a pair of NHL Draft Picks.
While attending graduate school at Miami University, Miller was a volunteer assistant for the RedHawks' varsity program for a year in addition to acting as head coach for the school's club team for two years. He earned a Master of Science degree in Sport Studies from Miami in 2006.
At Vermont, Miller played four seasons for the Catamounts from 1999-03 and appeared in 91 career games, totaling 35 points on 13 goals and 22 assists. After serving as team captain in his final campaign, he was one of 12 senior student-athletes to win an Athletic Department award; the Russell O. Sunderland Trophy presented to the senior who has persevered over obstacles throughout their Vermont career. Miller graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 2003.
Miller was a three-year Prep player for Culver from 1996-1999 and was a two-time Jim Henderson MVP Award winner and captain.
He has been active in the USA Hockey summer development camps coaching the select 14, 15 and 16 camps as well as participating in several USA Hockey Coaches Clinics.
A native of Spokane, Wash., Miller and his wife Jessica, have two daughters, Addyson and Emma.
