AMHERST, Mass. - Perry McIntyre and Darren Thellen were named to the Phil Steele All-MAC Teams as announced by the publication on Tuesday. One of the nation's premier college football preview publications, the magazine also names pre-season, mid-season and post-season all-conference teams. As two of UMass' veteran defensive stalwarts, McIntyre earned first-team accolades, while Thellen was selected as a member of the third team.

At the conclusion of the MAC regular-season, McIntyre was also picked to the All-MAC First Team, while Thellen was named to the second team. Punter Colter Johnson also earned All-MAC honors as a member of the third team.

McIntyre finished second overall in the league with a career-best and team-leading 132 total tackles from his middle linebacker position. He averaged 11.0 tackles after starting in every game for the Minutemen in 2012. He also had 7.5 tackles-for-loss, 3 sacks and 4 pass break-ups. He led the UMass defense in both TFLs and sacks for the year.

The Royal Palm Beach, Fla., native finished his career with 354 total tackles which ranks ninth all-time at UMass. His 203 assisted tackles is the fourth most for a career. In his final game as a Minuteman, he posted a career-high 18 tackles against Central Michigan which was tied for the second most in the MAC this season.

Thellen also started every game of the season at free safety and finished second on the team in total tackles with 79 for the year. The Brockton, Mass., native also added a team-best three interceptions and three pass break-ups.

A veteran fixture in the defensive secondary, Thellen finished his career with 239 total tackles in 45 games played. He posted 10 interceptions during his career for a program-best 256 return yards. In 2011, he had a career-high five interceptions for a single-season school-record 172 return yards.



In year two of its transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision, UMass posted a 1-11 overall record and a 1-7 mark in the Mid-American Conference. The Minutemen won their first game at the FBS level on Nov. 10 at Akron (22-14). The 2013 season will mark the first full FBS season for UMass as the Minutemen will be eligible to compete for the MAC Championship and will be bowl eligible. UMass will open the 2013 season on August 31 at Wisconsin.
