Kenny Cook, Liam Coen Named UMass/Dinn Bros. Co-Athletes Of The Week
Nov. 26, 2007
AMHERST, Mass. - Senior men's soccer defender Kenny Cook and junior quarterback Liam Coen have been named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Co-Athletes of the Week after both helped their teams to NCAA First Round victories. Cook made several key plays as the men's soccer team defeated Boston University on Friday and Coen set a new school record for passing yards in a game as the football team beat Fordham on Saturday.
Cook, a senior from Fairport, N.Y., had an assist on the game-winning goal and made perhaps the most important play of the game with 40 seconds remaining in the second half when he cleared away a BU shot that hit the post of an empty net. As part of one of the top defenses in the country, Cook and company held the Terriers with a single shot in the first half and turned away several big second half pushes allowing just one goal in the game at the 87th minute.
Coen, a junior from Newport, R.I., had 419 passing yards and four touchdowns as UMass defeated Fordham in the first round of the NCAA FCS Tournament. He broke his own personal-best game performance of 401 yards when he set in 2005 against New Hampshire. He passed Matt Guice who previously held the record with 403 yards set in 2001 against New Hampshire. It was Coen's seventh 300+ passing game in his three years at UMass.
The men's soccer team will advance to face No. 1 seed Boston College on Wednesday at 7 p.m., while the football team will head to Southern Illinois on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
The pair will be honored on Wednesday at the UMass Sports Luncheon in room 1009 of the Campus Center. The guest speakers will be football head coach Don Brown and hockey head coach Don "Toot" Cahoon. The Luncheon runs from Noon to 1 p.m. and features a full salad-to-dessert meal for just $8.00. For reservations call 413-545-4290.
