Football To Honor Seniors & Celebrate Bay State Educators At Akron Game

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The UMass Minutemen football team will celebrate its graduating seniors and honor the commonwealth's top educators when it takes on the University of Akron for the final home game of the season at Gillette Stadium Saturday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m.

Prior to kickoff, the Minutemen will acknowledge the 18 seniors and graduate students who have helped lift the football program to the Football Bowl Subdivision, including captain tight end Rob Blanchflower. Christine McCormick, dean of the College of Education, and Stephen Cavanagh, dean of the College of Nursing, will then serve as honorary captains for the opening coin toss as the Minutemen welcome alumni from the two colleges and educators from the state and the region to the game for Educator Appreciation Day. During halftime, various award-winning and nominated educators from Massachusetts will be recognized on the field for their outstanding contributions to the state.

Activities, food, music and alumni celebrations will start at 10 a.m. with the opening of the UMass Amherst Alumni Association Tailgate Tent and MinuteFan Park. Fans and alumni have the opportunity to meet Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy to learn about the latest research and advances at the College of Education and the College of Nursing.

The Minutemen Marching Band, cheerleaders and dance team will provide entertainment at MinuteFan Park, and fans can play various tailgating games. At 10:30 a.m., the Minutemen team buses arrive at the Tailgate Tent and fans can take part in the traditional Minutemen Team March, as head coach Charley Molnar and the players greet fans and alumni while they enter Gillette Stadium for the final time this season to prepare for action against the Zips.

The Tailgate Tent will serve lunch at 11 a.m., and for $10 fans can enjoy hot dogs, beef and vegetarian burgers, chips, pasta salad, assorted cookies, coffee, hot cocoa with whipped cream and soft drinks.



The game will be available for viewing online at and via the WatchESPN app on tablets and smartphones. As always, the game will also be broadcast regionally on the UMass Sports Radio Network, which is also available online and via the TuneIn app.
