Oct. 15, 2013
NEW YORK - University of Massachusetts football redshirt-senior Rob Blanchflower was named to the 2013 John Mackey Award Midseason Watch List on Tuesday afternoon, as announced by the organization. The John Mackey Award is given to the most outstanding collegiate tight end each year and is chosen by vote of the selection committee. Blanchflower is one of 29 tight ends from NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision squads to earn a spot on the list.
In three appearances this season, Blanchflower has 156 receiving yards on 15 receptions (10.4 yards per catch) to go with one touchdown. His 47-yard catch that produced the eventual game-winning score against Miami (Ohio) also sent Blanchflower over 1,000 career receiving yards. Entering competition against Buffalo on Oct. 19, the Leominster, Mass., native has 97 receptions for 1,007 yards in 35 games played as a Minuteman.
The award will be presented live on Dec., 12, 2013 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show hosted on ESPNU at 6 p.m. A list of semifinalists will be distributed on Nov. 18 while the finalists will be announced on Nov. 25.
Four tight ends from the Mid-American Conference appear on the midseason watch list, with Bowling Green's Alex Bayer, Ball State's Zane Fakes and Eastern Michigan's Tyreese Russell joining Blanchflower.
