Hilliard And Wilson Honored As UMass Co-Athletes Of The Week
Oct. 7, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass Sports Luncheon Committee selects Rachel Hilliard of the women's cross country team and football's Jamal Wilson as this week's UMass Co-Athletes of the Week. This is the first time either athlete has been awarded the honor. Hilliard led the way for UMass at the highly competitive Paul Short Invitational while Wilson recorded career numbers in the battle against Bowling Green.
Saturday afternoon it was Hilliard once again who finished first for the Minutewomen in one of the top cross country meets annually on the East Coast. UMass raced against #6 Georgetown, #10 Cornell, #12 Villanova, #13 Penn State, #29 West Virginia and 43 other highly ranked regional opponents from across the country.
Running for her team hindered by three key injuries, Hilliard led the Minutewomen to a 36th place overall finish. This is the juniors third time in as many meets finishing at the top of the pack, completing the course in 21-minutes, 40-seconds for a 84th place finish overall in a field of 406 competitors.
On the gridiron in Ohio it was Jamal Wilson who had the best game of his collegiate career in UMass' 28-7 loss to MAC East leader Bowling Green. The redshirt sophomore ran for a career high 119 yards on 20 carries, the most yardage a running back has ran so far this season. Wilson picked up 51 of the 119 on a single play which is the program's longest run since Julian Talley busted a 69-yard run against Central Connecticut on October 8, 2011.
Wilson's run was just the fifth time since 2009 that a UMass running back had a run of 50-or-more yards. The 119 yards nearly doubled his previous career rushing total of 67 yards on 26 carries in 16 games as he carried the work load at running back with Stacey Bedell and Lorenzo Woodley still limited from injuries against Vanderbilt.
This week's UMass Sports Luncheon will feature the UMass hockey coaching staff. Coach Micheletto and his supporting staff will talk about this year's team and preview the 2013-14 season beginning this Friday at Boston University. Also making an appearance will be Coach Molnar or one of his assistants to give an update on the football team as they prepare to face off against Miami (Ohio).
The luncheon is scheduled to start at 12 P.M. in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center. Admission is $13 for a buffet lunch and free parking is available in the back parking lot of the Mullins Center.
