Sept. 25, 2012
AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass Sport Luncheon Committee has selected Michael Cox and Chantal Swiszcz as Co-UMass Athlete of the Week after Cox ran for 188 yards Saturday against Miami (Ohio) while Swiszcz finished the weekend with a 3-1 singles record and a 4-0 doubles record.
Micheal Cox had a career-high performance on Saturday at Miami (Ohio) with 188 yards on the ground on 30 carries with a pair of touchdowns. The graduate student had eight carries in which he ran for 10 yards or more while picking up 9 of UMass' 26 first downs. Cox made ESPN Sports Center's No. 5 Play of the Day with a nine-yard rushing touchdown, leaping into the end zone on a front end-over-end flip. Cox's 188 yards in a game were the most of any UMass running back since 2008.
Sharing the award with Cox, Chantal Swiszcz won the Flight A Doubles alongside Yuliana Motyl and advanced to the Flight D Main Draw Finals to help UMass to a strong showing at the West Point Invitational hosted by Army. In singles action, Swiszcz won her opening round match on Friday and a quarterfinal and semifinal match on Saturday. In Sunday's finale, she lost to teammate Chanel Glasper in three sets. Paired with Yuliana Motyl on the doubles side, Swiszcz helped secure a pair of Flight A wins on Friday followed by a semifinal win on Saturday. Sunday's Main Draw title set saw the duo defeat Fordham's Sarah Ali and Bella Genkina. All told, she finished the weekend with a 3-1 singles record and a 4-0 record on the doubles side.
