Hernandez, Nelms Each Earn Weekly Honors
Sept. 19, 2011
AMHERST, Mass. - Redshirt freshman Kirk Nelms was named the CAA Rookie of the Week and Jonathan Hernandez was named the UMass Athlete of the Week after the pair helped UMass to a 36-27 win over Rhode Island on Saturday. Hernandez will be recognized at the UMass Sports Luncheon this Wednesday which will be at 12:15 PM in Room 1009 of the Campus Center.
Nelms made the most of his first career start by picking off two passes and returning one for a touchdown, helping him to CAA Football Rookie of the Week accolades. The Spotsylvania, Va., native became the second UMass player in two seasons to pick off two passes, but most impressive was his second of the evening which sealed the 36-27 win for the Minutemen over Rhode Island.
Nelms' game-winning 80-yard interception return for a touchdown came in the fourth quarter with UMass clinging to a 22-21 lead. UMass went on to score again in the game, and later gave up a game-ending TD to the Rams. Nelms has now forced three turnovers in two early season games for Massachusetts.
Hernandez set career-highs in both carries (32) and yards rushing (167) as he pounded away for a pair of touchdowns on the ground. Through the air he also hauled in two passes for 49 yards to finish the game with 216 all-purpose yards.
For the redshirt senior tailback from Leominster, Mass., it was his second 100-yard rushing game of the year and the third consecutive dating back to last season.
Along with UMass football head coach Kevin Morris, UMass ice hockey head coach Don "Toot" Cahoon will be a featured speaker on Wednesday to preview the 2011-12 hockey season.
