AMHERST, Mass. - For the second straight season, senior linebacker Tyler Holmes and redshirt senior tight end Emil Igwenagu will serve as co-captains of the UMass football team as announced by head coach Kevin Morris following the first week of preseason practice.

Holmes, one of the top returning defensive players in FCS football, earned multiple All-American honors in 2010, was the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Defensive Player of the Year, and was named the National Defensive Player of the Year. For the second consecutive year, Holmes is also on the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List which honors the top FCS defensive player.

The native of Blacksburg, Va., led UMass with 110 tackles, five interceptions (including two returned for touchdowns), 12 tackles for loss, and five sacks. He enters 2011 with 243 career tackles and 10 interceptions.

Igwenagu returns to the offense after missing several games in 2010 due to injury. He finished sixth on the team with 12 catches for 142 yards. At 6-foot-2, 245 pounds, the Boylston, Mass., native is a versatile player being able to line-up on the line of scrimmage, split out of the formation or in the backfield.

In 31 career games, he has 36 catches for 441 yards (13.4 per catch). His return gives the Minutemen a pair of quality tight ends when paired with redshirt sophomore Rob Blanchflower.

Along with serving as team co-captain last season, Igwenagu was also a member of the CAA Preseason First Team and the Phil Steele Preseason CAA First Team.

UMass enters its second week of preseason camp with the season opener at Holy Cross on Thursday, Sept. 1 just two weeks away. The game is set for an 8 PM kick-off and will be televised live nationally on the CBS Sports Network.

Season tickets and individual game tickets are now on sale. Fans who renew or purchase season tickets for the first time will receive a special offer for Gillette Stadium in 2012 when the Minutemen transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision as a member of the Mid-American Conference.
