AMHERST, Mass. - The 2007 UMass football team began its defense of the conference crown and its national finalist title with the start of preseason camp on Wednesday. The Minutemen went through weight and training tests in addition to checking in and practicing for the first time under the lights.

The morning was filled with meetings followed by lunch. Next physicals took place and an equipment check at McGuirk Stadium.

The highlight of the first day of camp is the bench press in the Boyden Weight Room. With John Hatchell graduated after a school-record 525 last season, his brother Jason Hatchell, who lifted 445 last season was the favorite to claim the overall crown. Hatchell lifted 440 as part of his training. Sophomore Kyle C. Harrington, who will compete for a starting spot on the defensive line, benched a personal best 435 pounds.

A total of six Minutemen lifted over 400 including Biff Gottehrer at 410 pounds, Brandon Collier at 405 and newcomer Breyone Evans at 405. Brad Listorti has also hoisted 405.

That was followed by the mat room, a training exercise and then conditioning and training on Garber Field.

Following dinner, it was off to team meetings and then finally, the first practice of the year at 8:30 p.m. under the lights at the Gladchuck Practice Facility.
