Holmes Named CAA Preseason Defensive Player Of Year

July 27, 2011

BALTIMORE - The Colonial Athletic Association announced its football Preseason All-Conference team on Wednesday at its annual Media Day in Baltimore with two UMass players on the squad, led by senior linebacker Tyler Holmes being named the conference's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Senior wide receiver Julian Talley joins Holmes on the Preseason All-Conference squad. The Minutemen were selected fifth in the CAA preseason poll, garnering one first place vote.

This is the second year in a row being named Preseason All-CAA for Holmes while Talley gets his first nod.

A native of Blacksburg, Va., Holmes was the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2010 and earned All-American honors from The Sports Network, the AFCA, the Associated Press and College Sporting News. He was a fifth-place finisher for the Buchanan Award and is once again on the preseason watch list for the honor that goes to the nation's top defensive player in FCS.

In 2010, Holmes led the Minutemen in tackles (110), tackles for loss (12), interceptions (5), and forced fumbles (2). He returned two of his interceptions for touchdowns, both coming against Maine on Nov. 6.

In three seasons at UMass, Holmes has accumulated 243 tackles including 116 solo stops and 20 tackles for loss. He has 10 career interceptions and six sacks in 27 total games.

Talley, a native of Winslow, N.J., had a breakout season in 2010, starting in all 11 games and doubling his previous career high in receptions with 56, second most on the team. He racked up 747 receiving yards for a 13.3 average yards per catch. Talley's six touchdown receptions led the Minutemen.

In 34 career games, Talley has caught 102 passes for 1331 yards and seven scores.

Holmes and Talley were also both named to Dick Steele's Preseason First-Team All-CAA squad.

The Minutemen will kick-off the 2011 season on Thursday, Sept. 1 at Holy Cross. Kick-off is set for 8 PM as the game will be televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network. Season tickets are currently on sale by calling 866-UMASS-TIX or by Ordering Online.
