AMHERST, Mass. - With the start of preseason just two weeks away, the University of Massachusetts had four players earn All-Colonial Conference Preseason accolades from Phil Steele Magazine - one of the top publications to cover college football. In addition to the All-CAA nods, Tyler Holmes was also honored as a Preseason All-American First Team pick. As a team, the Minutemen were picked 23rd in the top-40 rankings as well.

Holmes, one of the top returning linebackers in the country, and redshirt senior wide receiver Julian Talley were each named to the All-CAA First Team. A candidate for the Buck Buchanan Award, Holmes led the UMass defense last year with 110 tackles and five interceptions. Holmes earned multiple All-American honors last year, was named the Co-CAA Defensive Player of the Year, and was a two-time National Defensive Player of the Year.

Talley had a breakout season in 2010 with 56 catches for 747 yards and 6 touchdowns and will lead the UMass receiving corps in 2011.

Tailback Jonathan Hernandez and left tackle Nick Speller were named to the All-CAA second team by the magazine.

Hernandez posted nearly 1,000 yards despite splitting touches with John Griffin in the backfield. On 219 carries, he gained 938 yards and scored nine touchdowns. He also added 16 catches for 211 yards and a score.

Speller played in all 11 games last season after transferring to UMass from Syracuse. He helped anchor an offense which gained 413 total offensive yards per game last season including 168 rushing yards per game.

The 2011 season will officially kick-off at Holy Cross on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 8 PM and will be televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network (formerly CBS College Sports). Following an early bye week, UMass will return to the friendly confines of McGuirk Alumni Stadium for a 6:30 PM kick-off against historic rival Rhode Island (9/17). That game will be televised on Comcast SportsNet New Engalnd.
