UMass Athletics, Football Program Host Topping Out Ceremony
July 2, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass Athletic Department and the Minutemen football program hosted a Topping Out Ceremony at the Football Performance Center, in conjunction with the Consigli Construction Co., to mark the end of the initial project construction phase on Tuesday morning. A time-honored event, the Topping Out Ceremony is a builders' rite that occurs when the final beam is ready to be put in place atop the structure.
Consigli Construction Company Project Manager Joe Balzano explained the event to fans, alumni, members of the football team and the department staff before head coach Charley Molnar and redshirt-senior tight end Rob Blanchflower thanked everyone present for their support of the program. After each individual signed the final beam, the Consigli Construction crew hoisted it into place with the ceremonial evergreen tree, meant to bring good luck and symbolize growth, and flags attached.
