June 28, 2014

The UMass Sports Network (@UMassSportsNet) caught up with members of the football team this week during their time helping at the Holyoke Boys & Girls Club. The Minutemen spend time each week during the summer serving as mentors, friends and tutors at the boys and girls club which is beneficial to both the kids and the players.

D.J. Woods, Matt Sparks, Daniel Maynes and Jovan Santos-Knox are all interview, while D'Metrius Williams is mic'd up in the piece.

Woods and Sparks both say the team helps with homework first before doing some more fun activities like playing kickball or doing activities.

Carlos Aponte, a group leader for the Boys & Girls Club, says the work is important because it introduces the children to the concept of being able to go to college. "Knowing that these guys can succeed in college inspires them," says Aponte.

"Giving back to the community is important," says Santos-Knox. "Some of the kids need positive figures in their lives and we are here to support them."

"I was once one of these kids running around a Boys & Girls Club," continues Santos-Knox. "To be able to give back to the Boys & Girls Club which has been a big part of my life is good. But overall, to spend time with the kids is just a lot of fun."
