Football Announces Eight Walk-On Players For 2014 Season

The UMass football team has announced the addition of eight walk-on student-athletes for the upcoming 2014 season. Five of the eight new members of the program hail from the Bay State and will join head coach Mark Whipple's impressive incoming class this fall.

The group is made up of two wide receivers, two linemen, a running back/athlete, a tight end, a defensive back and a place kicker adding additional depth to those positions for the upcoming season.

Basit Dennis - OL/DL - 6-2/280 lbs - Worcester, Mass. - Worcester Academy
T.J. Kelley - WR - 6-6/215 lbs - Shrewsbury, Mass. - St. John's HS
Andrew Libby - ATH - 6-0/195 lbs - Saco, Maine - Thornton Academy
Jon Lucier - TE - 6-6/215 lbs - Holden, Mass. - Wachusett Regional HS
Joe Previte - OL/DL - 6-2/285 lbs - Brockton, Mass. - Northfield Mt. Hermon
Jeremy Rodriguez - DB - 6-2/205 lbs - Hillsdale, N.J. - East Coast (MA) Prep
Matthew Wylie - PK - 6-5/190 lbs - Dripping Springs, Texas - Dripping Springs HS


Alfred Adarkwah - WR - 6-4/175 lbs - Worcester, Mass. - Doherty Memorial HS
Adarkwah played an integral role in the Division 4 state title victory this past season. He caught seven touchdowns in five postseason games including a 41-yard score in the championship game. He finished his senior campaign with 12 touchdowns and 620 yards receiving.

Basit Dennis - OL/DL - 6-2/280 lbs - Worcester, Mass. - Worcester Academy
Dennis attended Holy Name before going to Worcester Academy for a post-graduate year this past season. He played on both sides of the ball helping Holy Name reach the Division 2 semifinals in 2012.

T.J. Kelley - WR - 6-6/215 lbs - Shrewsbury, Mass. - St. John's HS
One of the top wide receivers for St. John's during the 2013 season which saw the Pioneers reach the MIAA Division 2 Superbowl. Kelley hauled in nearly 30 catches for over 400 yards and six catches as a senior on the gridiron. A two-sport athlete who excelled in basketball and football, Kelley also led the hoops squad to the state championship game as well.


Andrew Libby - ATH - 6-0/195 lbs - Saco, Maine - Thornton Academy
After being named the 2012 Maine Gatorade Football Player of the Year as a junior, Libby missed the bulk of the 2013 season due to injury. A versatile player on both offense and defense for the Trojans, Libby led Thornton to the Class A State title in 2012 thanks in part to 1,091 yards and 23 touchdowns along with 98 tackles and six interceptions.

Jon Lucier - TE - 6-6/215 lbs - Holden, Mass. - Wachusett Regional HS
Played tight end and wide receiver at Wachusett Regional High School where he served as team captain as a senior. Was a Wachusett All-Star selection. Also a member of the track team where he was a league champion in the javelin and placed 3rd at the district championship in the triple jump. Extremely active off the field as an Eagle Scout, a summer worker at a farm and a one-time back-up singer for Kenny Rogers during a 2012 Holiday concert.

Joe Previte - OL/DL - 6-2/285 lbs - Brockton, Mass. - Northfield Mt. Hermon
Was an All-Massachusetts defensive line selection as a senior at Brockton High School before doing a post-graduate year at Northfield Mt. Hermon this past season. Prep highlights include an 80-yard fumble recovery and return for a touchdown and All-New England accolades following the season. Was a four-year starter at Brockton where he posted 50 tackles as a senior and earned Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic honors in 2012 along with ESPN Boston All-State honors. Comes from a football family as both his older brothers, Josh and Sam, were both standout players at Brockton as well.

Jeremy Rodriguez - DB - 6-2/205 lbs - Hillsdale, N.J. - East Coast (MA) Prep
Rodriguez played for Pope John HS in New Jersey before taking a post-graduate year at East Coast Prep in Great Barrington, Mass. In 2013 with ECP, had 27 tackles and three sacks in 12 games. At Pope John, had a fumble recovery and an interception return for a touchdown in the NJAC division championship win. Played in the 2013 Robeson All-Star Football Classic.

Matthew Wylie - PK - 6-5/190 lbs - Dripping Springs, Texas - Dripping Springs HS
Wylie earned all-district first team honors as a senior with three made field goals and a perfect 32-of-32 on extra points. Never had a field goal or PAT attempt blocked during his prep career. Also named to TexasHSFootball.com High School Football Elite Team for Region IV. Has range inside 55 yards with five career kicks of 40-or-more yards in games. Also handled kick-off duties. Was the USTA Kicking Camp Champion in 2013. Coached by current Oakland Raiders and former Dallas Cowboys kicking coach Chris Boniol.
