UMass Announces Creation Of Football Gridiron Club
June 4, 2014
With the return of Mark Whipple as the football program's head coach, the new Football Performance Center nearly complete, games returning to McGuirk Stadium, and the continual growth at the Football Bowl Subdivision, UMass has announced the creation of the UMass Football Gridiron Club.
The football booster program has served under several names including the 100 Yard Club and the Friends of Football over the last few years. It has been renamed and re-organized with nominations open for a new Board of Directors to oversee the group. The primary goal still remains the same - the continued support and fundraising for UMass football.
Below is a letter sent from UMass football head coach Mark Whipple discussing the re-branding, asking for nominations, and announcing the July 25 Gridiron Club Golf Tournament at Hickory Ridge Country Club.
Dear Supporters of UMass Football,
I would like to thank you for your support of the UMass Football program and update you on some new changes surrounding our program. In my first few months back in Amherst, I have been meeting regularly with some of our alumni and boosters. It's been great reconnecting with many of you and I am tremendously excited about the bright future we have here at UMass. In close consultation with John McCutcheon, our athletic director and some key volunteers, we have decided to chart a new course for our football booster program.
It is with great excitement that we announce the renaming of our football booster program, The 100 Yard Club / Friends of UMass Football is now THE UMASS FOOTBALL GRIDIRON CLUB.
UMass is committed to building a football program that exemplifies competitive excellence, and the difference between a good team and a great program is the support of its alumni and friends. This is where your contributions to the program are so vital. The Gridiron Club will continue to provide additional resources that directly benefit our program in such critical support areas as academic services, recruiting, dining and nutrition, football operations and facility management.
As part of our renaming process, we are also establishing a Board of Directors for the organization that will help carry the banner for UMass Football and expand our base of support. Enclosed with this letter is a Board of Directors nomination form. If you or someone you know would like to be part of the leadership group who will help drive the key initiatives of UMass Football, please return this form to the athletic department by Friday, June 13. John McCutcheon and I will review all nominations and determine from this group the executive members of the Gridiron Club Board of Directors.
Lastly, as a kickoff to the upcoming 2014 football season, I would like to invite you to participate in our annual UMass Football Gridiron Club Golf Tournament on July 25th that will help kick off our WE BUILT WEEKEND. This is a great opportunity to spend some time with the Minutemen family and to meet our coaching staff, student-athletes and former players. The tournament will be held at Hickory Ridge CC here in Amherst and will finish with a great dinner, so even if you don't golf, I hope you will make plans to join us for dinner that evening.
We will have more information on the UMass Football Gridiron Club Golf Tournament in the coming weeks. Please find enclosed more information about the UMass Football Gridiron Club and the benefits of membership. I ask you to consider making an investment in our program with your membership and thank you in advance for helping to continue the great tradition of UMass Football.
