June 3, 2014
AMHERST, Mass. - With the 2014 college football campaign drawing nearer, the early summer brings the beginnings of previews and preseason all-star predictions to set the scene. On Monday, Phil Steele released his 2014 Preseason All-MAC teams with four Minutemen represented: Stanley Andre, Trey Dudley-Giles, Randall Jette, and Tajae Sharpe.
Dudley-Giles earned praise as a return specialist being picked as the league's First Team punt returner and third team kick-off returner. Sharpe was selected as a Third Team wide receiver, while Andre and Jette were named to the Four Team at linebacker and cornerback, respectively.
A junior cornerback from Dade City, Fla., Dudley-Giles was one of the top specialists in the Mid-American Conference last season averaging 12.2 yards per punt return and 22.3 yards per kick return. Additionally, he started nine of 11 games played with 42 tackles, three pass break-ups and two fumble recoveries.
Sharpe is the top returning wide receiver for UMass after leading the team last year with 61 catches for 680 yards and four touchdowns. The junior from Piscataway, N.J., ranked eighth in the MAC among wide receivers in 2013 and figures to once again be one of the league's top targets. The two-year starter enters the 2014 campaign with 81 career receptions for 886 yards.
Andre had a career season in 2013 after moving back to his natural linebacker position. The native of Dorchester, Mass., led the Minutemen with 11 total tackles in 12 games. He had six tackles for loss and forced one fumble. In seven games last season, he had eight-or-more tackles finishing the year ranked 11th in overall tackles in the MAC. Against Northern Illinois, he posted a career-best 17 tackles which was his third game of the year with 10-or-more stops.
A redshirt-junior from Oak Bluffs, Mass., Jette is widely considered as one of UMass' top cover corners. The two-year starter posted 45 tackles in 2013 with 11 pass break-ups, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He also had one interception. Jette ranked fifth overall among all MAC players in pass break-ups.
