UMass Football To Play At Michigan On Sept. 18, 2010
May 28, 2009
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass football will play before the largest crowd ever to watch a UMass sporting event as the Minutemen have agreed to play at the University of Michigan on Sept. 18, 2010 at Michigan Stadium, affectionately known as the "Big House." The two universities have agreed to a contract in which UMass will travel to Ann Arbor in two seasons from now.
"We are extremely excited to play a game against a program with such history and prestige as Michigan," said Athletic Director John McCutcheon. "We think it will be a tremendous experience for our student-athletes and our fans. We are looking forward to playing before more than 100,000 people and think it will be a very memorable event."
New UMass head coach Kevin Morris is looking forward to the experience as well. "Playing at Michigan presents our players with a unique opportunity to play in one of the best venues college football has to offer," said Morris. "We are excited about the challenge of playing a team of Michigan's caliber, but our focus now is all on this season's opening game at Kansas State."
UMass will play the game before the largest crowd ever to watch a school team compete, as Michigan Stadium's capacity is listed at 106,201. The Wolverines have drawn crowds of more than 100,000 for 215 consecutive games and have led the nation in attendance for 33 of the past 34 years. Michigan reestablished the NCAA single-game attendance record at 112,118 fans for the Ohio State game in 2003.
The largest crowd ever to watch UMass football play came last season at Texas Tech when 53,190 watched the Minutemen take on the No. 10 Red Raiders on Sept. 20, 2008. The only other crowd of more than 50,000 to watch the Minutemen in any sport came in a football game at NC State on Sept. 28, 2002 (51,221).
For UMass, the Michigan game will mark the 11th time in 12 years the Minutemen will face a team from the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A). This coming year, UMass will travel to Kansas State for a season-opening match-up on Sept. 5, 2009. Last season, UMass played at then-No. 10 Texas Tech. UMass last defeated an FBS team in 1984, beating Ball State. All-time UMass has an 8-20 record against FBS teams.
Michigan suffered one of the greatest upsets in college football history, to an FCS team in 2007, losing to then-defending FBS champion Appalachian State on Sept. 1, 34-32 before a crowd of 109,218. Prior to that game, featuring the fifth-ranked Wolverines, no FCS team had beaten a team ranked in The Associated Press poll since Division I subdivisions were created in 1978.
Tickets for UMass' 2009 season are now available by calling 1-866-UMASS-TIX. The Minutemen open the season on Sept. 5, 2009 at Kansas State before hosting three games in a row starting with Albany on Sept. 12, 2009, under the lights at McGuirk Stadium.
