UMass Concludes Spring Workouts With Spirited Spring Game
April 28, 2012
AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass football team concluded its first spring workouts under head coach Charley Molnar with a spirited Spring Game with many former alumni in attendance at McGuirk Alumni Stadium Saturday.
The entire day served as a celebration of the strong leaders that have come through the Minutemen program over the years and saw some hard hits and big plays on the field before a barbecue ended the days festivities.
On the field, the defense was strong up front and allowed just four rushes of more than 10 yards, while keeping the passing in game in check as well.
The first half saw the current UMass first- and second-teamer against a group of alumni. Junior quarterback Kellen Pagel threw for 109 yards on 7-of-8 with the big play coming on a 61-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wideout Marken Michel.
Sophomore running back Jordan Broadnax rushed for 22 yards in the first half with a six-yard touchdown. He finished the game with 65 yards on 16 carries.
The second half saw the first and second teams go against one another. Sophomore running back Brian Dowling caught seven balls for 36 yards, while eight other Minutemen combined for 10 receptions and 122 yards.
Junior Brendon Levengood had the only points after the half as he connected on a 33-yard field goal. He also made both extra points in the first half.
