UMass Football Offers Boston Marathoners Chance To `Cross The Finish Line' At Saturday's Spring Game
April 17, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - In the wake of the Boston Marathon Bombing, UMass football head coach Charley Molnar, an avid runner himself, is offering those who were competing at the marathon a chance to `Cross The Finish Line' this Saturday afternoon at the Minutemen's Spring Game at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. Those runners will be able to take a lap around the field, cross the finish line which will be set-up at the 50-yard line and will be presented a gift on behalf of the UMass football program.
The event will take place at halftime of the annual Spring Game which kicks-off at 4 PM (free admission/parking). As the runners take a lap around the field, their names will be displayed on the stadium's video board in recognition of their accomplishment.
"Competing in the Boston Marathon is a lifetime achievement and something to be celebrated," said Molnar who has run everyday for the past five years. "These runners deserve to finish what they started and we hope we can provide that for them. We want them to have that feeling of coming down the home stretch to the sound of applause and to have their friends and families greet them as they cross the line."
Those who would like to participate are asked to register by e-mailing the football program's administrative assistant Joanne Chauvin at firstname.lastname@example.org. This will allow the program to put names on the video board as the runners cross the line and to have an appropriate number of gifts available. Runners are also encouraged to wear their racing bibs as they take the lap around the field.
The football team will also wear commemorative Boston Marathon sticker on the back of each players' helmets to recognize those lost and injured in the bombing, the first responders at the scene and the marathon runners.
