Exciting Slate On Tap As UMass Announces 2014 Football Schedule
Feb. 28, 2014
AMHERST, Mass. - In conjunction with the Mid-American Conference, the University of Massachusetts announced its 2014 football schedule on Friday afternoon. The upcoming slate features a season-opener against Boston College at Gillette Stadium and three home games at McGuirk Stadium in Amherst including a Wednesday night game in November.
UMass will play a total of six home games this upcoming season with three at Gillette Stadium and three at McGuirk Stadium. This will mark the return of games to the longtime home of the Minutemen as construction of the UMass Football Performance Center and the new Martin And Richard Jacobson Press & Skybox Complex is due to be completed this July.
The season will officially kick off against Boston College on August 30 at Gillette Stadium. The Minutemen will also welcome Colorado of the PAC 12 to Gillette Stadium on Sept. 6.
The third contest in Foxborough will be against Mid-American foe Eastern Michigan on Oct. 18 and will be the annual Band Day game.
The first game at McGuirk Stadium will be against Bowling Green on Sept. 27 and will be the Minutemen’s Homecoming game.
On Nov. 12, UMass will host Ball State at 8:00 PM at McGuirk in its first nationally televised game at the facility since hosting Fordham in the FCS Playoffs in 2007. The Wednesday night game, the first ever in the program’s 132-year history, will be televised on either ESPN2 or ESPNU (to be determined in the weeks prior to the game).
The final home game at McGuirk will be the conference’s annual Friday game the day after Thanksgiving as Buffalo visits Amherst on Nov. 28 – the first meeting between the two teams in the stadium since 1998. That game will be part of the MAC’s flex package for the week with two league games being shown on either ESPNU or ESPN3.com.
UMass will play non-conference road games at Vanderbilt on Sept. 13 and at Penn State on Sept. 20. The Minutemen will be on the road three times in October traveling to Miami (Ohio) on Oct. 4, Kent State (10/11) and Toledo (10/25).
After its mid-week game against Ball State at McGuirk Stadium, UMass will head to Akron for a Tuesday night game on Nov. 18 with kick-off set for 8:00 PM. The game will also be televised on either ESPNU or ESPN3.com.
Times for all games not already set by ESPN will be announced at a later date.
The 2014 season will mark the first time UMass has ever played Colorado, Penn State, Kent State, and Eastern Michigan. The Minutemen will face Ball State and Toledo for the first time as MAC members. UMass is 1-1 all-time against Ball State with the last meeting back in 1988. UMass and Toledo last met in 1999 with the Rockets holding a 2-1 edge in the series.
