The University of Massachusetts placed three members on the Mid-American Conference All-Academic Team as announced by the league office on Friday. Devin Brown, Matt Sparks and Jeff Strait become the first Minutemen to officially earn the MAC honor. Ricardo Miller and David Osei were also with Honorable Mention accolades.

The three All-Academic honorees mark UMass' highest total since 2009 when the Minutemen placed four on the All-Colonial Athletic Association academic team.

A total of seven Minutemen have now earned either MAC All-Academic Team or Academic Honorable Mention honors in UMass' two years as members of the league.

The MAC All-Academic Team is voted on by the faculty athletic representatives at each league institution. A total of 41 student-athletes were named to the 2013 Academic All-MAC team.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

The number of honorees on the Academic All-MAC team is equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater. The remaining student-athletes have been recognized as Academic Honorable Mention selections.
