SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - R.J. Cobbs rushed for 187 yards and five touchdowns Saturday as Massachusetts pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 48-21 victory over Rhode Island.

Cobbs tied the school-record for touchdowns in a game and also became just the third freshman in Atlantic 10 history to reach 1,000 yards rushing in a single season, finishing with 1,067 yards.

Massachusetts (8-4, 6-3 Atlantic 10) trailed 21-14 in the second quarter, before scoring five unanswered touchdowns.

Cobbs scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter and added a 17-yard TD run at 4:37 of the third quarter to put the Minutemen up for good, 28-21.

Greg Scott connected with Adrian Zullo on a 49-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter before Cobbs added a pair of 1-yard scoring runs for the final margin.

Luther Green led Rhode Island (3-9, 1-8) with 117 yards rushing and Braxton Poitier rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown. Rhode Island's Wendall Williams scored on a 47-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter and added a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Jeff Krohn, 19-of-39 for 243 yards, found Joe Bruce on an 8-yard TD pass for the Minutemen in the second quarter. UMass had 500 yards of total offense.
