Talley's Career Day Not Enough As No. 22 UMass Falls To No. 13 UNH, 27-21

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - A career day for redshirt senior Julian Talley was not enough as No. 22 UMass fell to No. 13 New Hampshire, 27-21, Saturday evening at Gillette Stadium in the second Colonial Clash. Talley posted career highs in receptions (10), receiving yards (113), and offensive and all-purpose yards with 144. He also had two rushes for 31-yards and one score.
The Minutemen take the field again on Oct. 29 as they travel to Richmond to take the on Spiders. Kickoff is set for 1 PM.
New Hampshire (5-2, 3-1 CAA) got on the board early when junior running back Dontra Peters took the ball five yards for the score. Quarterback Kevin Decker passed to Brian McNally for the two-point conversion giving the Wildcats an early eight-point cushion. After capitalizing on a UMass interception in the endzone UNH marched down the field and scored on a 47-yard field goal by Mike MacArthur, ending the first quarter with a 11-0 lead.
UMass (4-3, 0-0 CAA) got the scoring going in the second quarter when Talley took the ball 23 yards for the touchdown. UMass was not able to convert on the two-point conversion.
After another touchdown by UNH, Jesse Julmiste took the ball back 48 yards on the kickoff setting up the Minuteman drive in UNH territory.
Jonathan Hernandez was able to top off the UMass drive taking the ball four yards for the score. The drive of 10 plays took five minutes, and brought the Minutemen into half time trailing 18-12.
The Wildcats accounted for the only scoring of the third quarter when Decker passed the ball 23-yards to senior tight end Sean Cullen. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful making the score 24-12 UNH.
The Minutemen got back on the board at the start of the fourth quarter on a 5-yard run by Kellen Pagel cutting the UNH lead to six. The drive went 19 plays in 11 minutes.
The score, however, would not be enough as the teams traded field goals at the end of the game to make the score 27-21 in favor of the Wildcats.
Pagel on the day was 25-42 for 249-yards and one interception. He set a career high in passes attempted and tied his career high of 25 completed passes last set on Oct. 1 against Old Dominion.
Hernandez finished off the day with 29 rushes for 89-yards and a score. He has now scored at least one rushing touchdown in his five-games.
Defensively, the Minutemen were led by senior linebacker Tyler Holmes who recorded 8.5 tackles and a sack. Perry McIntyre (7.5 tackles) and Darren Thellen (6 tackles) also continued to make contributions.
