Minutemen Preseve Victory In Final Seconds
Sept 20, 2003
ORONO, Maine (AP) - Jeff Krohn threw for 190 yards and a touchdown as Massachusetts held off Maine 24-16 on Saturday.
Steve Baylark carried 24 times for 106 yards to spearhead the Massachusetts (2-1, 1-0 Atlantic-10) ground game, while wide receiver Jimmie Howard made six catches for 121 yards and a touchdown.
Maine's offense controlled the field most of the evening, but the Black Bears (2-2, 1-1) were unable to get their running game in gear.
Maine instead relied on the arm of Ron Whitcomb, who completed 20 of 35 throws for 231 yards and two touchdowns, but was also intercepted twice.
Trailing 21-9, Maine cut the deficit on the final play of the third quarter when Whitcomb launched a 56-yard touchdown strike to Christian Pereira.
But Massachusetts responded with Michael Torres' 38-yard field goal, which made it 24-16 with 10:44 remaining.
Then with 24 seconds remaining, Bobby Boyer intercepted a Whitcomb pass at the Massachusetts 35-yard line to preserve the victory.
The Minutemen limited Marcus Williams, the Atlantic 10's leading rusher, to
67 yards on 17 carries.
