Jonathan Hernandez had his fourth-career 100-yard rushing game with 114.
Hernandez scored two touchdowns to give him four on the season and 12 in his career. It was his third-career multi-touchdown game.
Hernandez became the second UMass tailback to gain 100 yards on the ground against an FBS team with his 114. Last year Tony Nelson had 107 at Kansas State.
Kyle Havens ran for his first-career rushing touchdown on a 7-yard roll out in the fourth quarter.
UMass had its longest scoring drive of the season time-wise (7:01) with its fourth-quarter rushing TD by Havens.
Caleb Violette gave UMass a 3-0 lead in its game against an FBS team for the second year in a row. Last year, he kicked a 35-yard field goal at Kansas State. This year Violette booted a 29-yard field goal to give the Minutemen a 3-0 lead, 5:00 into the game.
Kumar Davis had his second-career interception, in the first quarter, off a tip by Darren Thellen.
WR Jesse Julmiste drew his first-career start at wide receiver. Also, true freshman Antoine Tharpe started at cornerback alongside redshirt freshman Mike Lee.
Scott Duggan blocked a punt for UMass. It was UMass' first blocked punt since last time it played a FBS team, D.J. Adeoba at Kansas State in 2009.
UMass is now 8-22 against FBS opponents since the division was formed in 1978. UMass has not beaten an FBS team since topping Ball State in 1984, 26-10.
UMass is also now 0-5 against ranked FBS teams with losses to No. 17 NC State in 2002, No. 7 Kansas State in 2003, No. 12 Boston College in 2007 and No. 10 Texas Tech in 2008.
