2012 UMass Football Postgame Notes
Sept. 8, 2012 vs. Indiana, Foxboro, Mass., Gillette Stadium
Coin Toss: UMass won the toss and deferred to the second half. Indiana received. Bill Cosby, Chancellor Subbaswammy, and members of the Air Force were included in the coin toss.
The Captains were Darren Thellen and Quinton Sales.
This was UMass' first home game as an FBS program.
The Minutemen were sporting their all black uniforms with white lettering.
UMass football alumni were lined down the UMass tunnel as they ran out onto the field.
Six freshmen or redshirt freshmen started for UMass in the Minutemen's FBS home-opener, including QB Mike Wegzyn, WR Tajae Sharpe, LG Michael Boland, RG John Wallace, SS Joe Colton, K Blake Lucas.
This was the first ever meeting between UMass and Indiana and was the third time UMass has played a team currently in the Big Ten. This is the first of two Big Ten teams UMass will face this season. The Minutemen will head to Michigan next week.
UMass moves to a 0-2 record on the season. The Minutemen have not started a season with two losses since 2001, when UMass suffered five consecutive losses to start the season.
Redshirt Freshman QB Mike Wegzyn scored the first ever FBS touchdown for UMass with a 16-yard run after throwing a 56-yard pass to Michel. His 56-yard completion was equal to his total passing yards against UConn. Wegzyn completed 18-of-26 passes for 151 yards, he also rushed seven times for 32-yards.
Sophomore WR Marken Michel led the Minutemen with 68-yards receiving on five catches, both of which are career-highs for the Florida native.
Redshirt Senior S Darren Thellen recorded his first interception on the season and returned it for 21 yards. Thellen led the Minutemen recording 11 total tackles.
Graduate Student RB Michael Cox rushed for 36-yards on a career-high 14 carries.
Sophomore RB Jordan Broadnax had a career-high 28-yard kick return in his first season as the kick returner.
Freshman WR Tajae Sharpe started his second collegiate game and caught 3 passes for 33-yards, including a new career long of 18-yards.
Freshman S Joe Colton started and played in his first collegiate game and picked up six total tackles, including one tackle for a loss.
The Minutemen head to Michigan Stadium to face the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday, September 15, 2012. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. This will be the second time UMass has faced Michigan, the last meeting was in 2010 when the Minutemen suffered a 42-37 loss in Ann Arbor.
