Mike Wood begins his fourth season at UMass, returning to coach tight ends in 2010. In 2009, Wood moved from coaching tight ends to coaching UMass' running backs. He spent the last three years working with some of the top tight ends in the confernce. Wood will work with Walter Payton Award candidate and All-CAA selection Tony Nelson this season in the backfield.
In 2008, Wood worked to build the corps of tight ends into a very productive unit. Led by senior Ian Jorgensen, UMass utilized the tight end to post one of the league's top offenses. Along with Jorgensen, Wood worked with Matt Silver, Andrew Krevis and Octavious Hawkins.
During the 2007 CAA Championship season, Wood tutored with Jorgensen, Silver and Rob Getek as the trio began key weapons for Walter Payton Award candidate Liam Coen.
In 2006, Wood worked with tight end Brad Listorti as he earned Second-Team All-Conference honors. Listorti emerged as one of the nation's top tight ends with 38 catches. Listorti was a preseason All-American by Street & Smith's in 2007. He signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 2008 and spent time with the New England Patriots in 2009.
Prior to UMass Wood served as an assistant coach during the 2002, 2004 and 2005 seasons at Gettysburg College wrapped around a season with the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars. He spent the 2005 season as Gettysburg's Special Teams Coordinator/Tight Ends/Offensive Line Assistant Coach after serving as the Special Teams/Defensive Line/Strength Coach in 2004 with the Bullets. He was also a member of the 2002 staff, coaching the outside linebackers that season.
Between his years at Gettysburg, he served as an Intern Special Teams Coach/Strength and Conditioning coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the 2003 season.
As a student-athlete at Western Maryland College -- now McDaniel College -- in Westminster, Maryland, he was an outside linebacker on four consecutive Centennial Conference championship teams. He graduated from McDaniel in 2001 with a degree in sociology and spent the 2001 football season as an assistant coach at the Charter School of Wilmington.
Wood's wife, Katie in the Senior Associate Director of Annual Giving working with the UMass Amherst Parents Fund along with the Parent and Family Council.
A native of Wilmington, Del., Wood and his wife, reside in Belchertown with their son, Charlie (born February 10, 2008).
