Malik Hall was named as the defensive line coach as announced by Head Coach Kevin Morris on Tuesday, June 21, 2011. Hall is a 2003 graduate of UMass where he was a two-year letterman and starter as a senior. He joins the Minutemen after serving as the defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at Wagner in 2010.
"We are excited to bring UMass alumnus, Malik Hall, back to the UMass football program. Malik will coach the defensive line after coordinating the defense, at Wagner College," said Morris.
"Malik's formative years in coaching were under the tutelage of our new defensive coordinator, Frank Forcucci. Malik knows the defense, he certainly knows UMass and is a great fit on our staff."
In addition to his time at Wagner, Hall has also coached at Fordham, Hofstra, and Central Connecticut. In 2006 and 2009, the Detroit, Mich., native served as the defensive line coach and special teams coordinator at Fordham. From 2007-08, he coached the defensive line at Hofstra while also serving as the NFL Liason. Hall began his coaching career as the defensive line coach and co-special teams coordinator at Central Connecticut from during the 2004 and 2005 season.
During his coaching career, he has recruited up-and-down the Eastern Seaboard and in the Midwest (Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin).
While coaching Wagner, Hall led the Seahawks to a No. 17 ranking among FCS teams in total defense. At Hofstra in 2008, the Pride had the top-rated passing defense in the Colonial Athletic Association, while in 2007 they ranked first in the CAA and 11th in FCS in rushing defense.
At Fordham, Hall helped develop an All-America selection and a pair of All-Patriot League honorees. In the summer of 2005, he took part in the Detroit Lions Minority Fellowship Program.
Hall, 30, helped UMass to the Atlantic 10 Championship title as a senior in 2003 where he posted 46 takles, five for loss, and two sacks. He transferred to UMass in the Spring of 2002 after playing Vermillion Community College in Ely, Minn. He graduated in December 2003 from UMass with a degree in sociology and education.
