UMass football coach Kevin Morris has named Frank Forcucci as the team's new defensive coordinator. Forcucci returns to UMass, where he served on the football staff from 1999-2003. Forcucci is a veteran coach, who has also spent time at Central Connecticut State, Fordham and Northeastern.
"We are very excited about Frank Forcucci returning to UMass in the role of defensive coordinator," said Morris, who is in his third year as head coach at UMass in 2011. "I have gotten to know Frank over the years and am impressed with his knowledge, organization and philosophy of defense. He brings great energy and enthusiasm to the staff and to our players. His skills as a coach and teacher as well as his familiarity with UMass will strengthen our program."
Forcucci served on the staff at UMass for five years worked as the outside linebackers coach from 2001-03, where he coached the like of All-American and current Jacksonville Jaguar Jeremy Cain. The Minutemen made two NCAA Tournaments with Forcucci on the staff in 1999 and 2003. Most recently, Forcucci worked as the linebackers coach at Central Connecticut State in 2010, his second stint with the Blue Devils. Under his tutelage, CCSU led the Northeast Conference in sacks and pass defense.
Forcucci held the position of defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Northeastern University in 2009. From 2006-08 Forcucci was the defensive coordinator at Fordham University. His Rams defenses dominated in the Patriot League, ranking first in the league in pass defense and second in total defense in 2008. During his first season with Fordham in 2006, the Rams' defense ranked first in the conference in turnovers and 11th in the country in tackles for a loss.
During the 2004 and 2005 seasons Forcucci was the defensive coordinator for the CCSU squad. In his first tenure at Central he helped lead the Blue Devils to back to back Co-Northeast Conference Championships. His defense in 2004 allowed only 13 first quarter points and held opponents to under 20 points per game for the first time since 1989.
Prior to joining the Blue Devils the first time, Forcucci spent five seasons at UMass. Before UMass, Forcucci served as the head football coach at Bristol Central High School for one year. He was the defensive coordinator at Bristol Central for four years before being named head coach.
