Tight Ends Coach

Third Season

Alma Mater:
Salisbury State, 1996

Derrick Arnold is beginning his third season on the UMass coaching staff, and his first year as tight ends coach. During his first two years with the Minutemen, Arnold served as a graduate assistant working with the UMass defensive backfield.

Last year, Arnold worked with a secondary which helped UMass rank sixth in the Atlantic 10 Conference in pass defense, allowing 196.1 yards per game. In 2000, UMass led the Atlantic 10 in pass defense, allowing only 159.5 yards per contest. Among the players Arnold worked with in the UMass defensive backfield were All-American Jeremy Robinson and All-Atlantic 10 selection Brian Smith.

Arnold came to UMass after serving one season as the wide receivers and tight ends coach at his alma mater, Salisbury (Md.) University. He previously spent time as an assistant coach at DuVal (Md.) High School.

During his playing days at Salisbury (1992-95), Arnold amassed career totals of 83 receptions for 843 yards. He still ranks fifth all-time in school history with his 83 career receptions. Arnold enjoyed his best season as a sophomore in 1993, when he caught 35 passes for 394 yards.

A native of Landover, Md., Arnold and his wife, Talisha, reside in Amherst.
