Dawson left to take a coaching position at Fordham in January 2006
Matt Dawson returns to his alma mater to serve as the assistant defensive line and outside linebackers coach in 2005. He will also be the defensive specialties coach working with packages on defense. Dawson spent last season as the linebackers and special teams coach at Central Connecticut, where he worked under former UMass defensive coordinator Tom Masella, now the head coach at CCSU. The Blue Devils had a sensational season in 2004, winning the Northeast Conference, finishing with an 8-2 overall record.
Dawson spent the 2002 and 2003 seasons on Mark Whipple's staff at UMass, In 2003 he worked with the tight ends. In his first season on the coaching staff with the Minutemen, Dawson served as a graduate assistant, working for Masella with the Minuteman defensive backfield.
In 2001, Dawson served as an assistant football and ice hockey coach at St. Peter Marian Central High School in Worcester, Mass. Dawson also served as a student assistant coach for the Minutemen during the 2000 season, helping UMass to a 7-4 record.
Dawson is a 2001 UMass graduate, with a bachelor's degree in sport management. He earned four letters for the Minutemen from 1996-1999, serving as team captain during his senior season. A three-year starter at outside linebacker, Dawson helped UMass to the NCAA Division I-AA national championship in 1998, and an Atlantic 10 Conference title in 1999. He finished his career with 250 tackles, 30 tackles for loss, 11-1/2 sacks and 11 pass breakups.
Dawson is a native of Pepperell, Mass.
