AMHERST, Mass. - UMass basketball redshirt freshman Maxie Esho has been named the UMass Athlete of the Week after helping the Minutemen to a 73-65 win over Davidson last Thursday. The win extended UMass' win streak to four games and kept the Minutemen perfect at home this season with a 6-0 mark. The Wildcats came to Amherst fresh off an upset win at No. 12 Kansas just three days prior to the meeting.

Esho scored a career-high 12 points off the bench to go with four rebounds and four steals. The Upper Marlboro, Md., native was 4-for-4 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the free throw line in 19 minutes of action. He posted his first career four-point play in the second half to spark a 17-4 run which helped UMass overcome a six-point halftime deficit. In that run, Esho had 6 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.

In 13 games played this season, Esho is now averaging 4.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.3 steals in just under 12 minutes per game. The 12 points marked the second time this season he has reached double-figures in the scoring column.

Esho will be honored on Wednesday at the weekly UMass Sports Luncheon which will be held in Room 1009 of the Campus Center. The Luncheon features a full salad-to-dessert buffet for just $11. This week, UMass men's swimming & diving coach Russ Yarworth and men's basketball assistant director of operations Tom Doherty will be the guest speakers.

The men's basketball team will return to action this Friday, Dec. 30 against Central Connecticut State in the Mullins Center. To order tickets, stop by the Mullins Center Box Office, call 866-UMASS-TIX or click here.
