LIVE BLOG: Men's Basketball Hosts Hofstra
Dec. 20, 2008
AMHERST, Mass. -
After handing one-loss #25/23 Kansas, its second loss of the season, last Saturday, 61-60, UMass will host another team with a sparkling record this Saturday at the Mullins Center. The Hofstra Pride come to Amherst with an 8-1 record riding an eight-game win streak. UMass (3-6) has won two games in a row with a 73-59 win over Holy Cross on Dec. 10 and the historic win over Kansas in Kansas City.
6:15 p.m. FINAL SCORE, UMass 97-81. Not the best ending, but overall, a tremendous game for the Minutemen...Always tough to follow up a big win and that they did...
Check UMassAthletics.com for the complete game story, game notes, and box score. A lot to write about, I have to defer to the recap and notes! Great win over a very good 8-1 team..third victory in a row...the team seems to be clicking on all cylinders.
Everyone, have a great rest of the weekend and holiday...Drive safely and stay warm. Go UMass!
6:12 p.m. Not a good ending...Hofstra is on a 15-5 run and has cut the UMass lead to 97-80...It's only natural to let up a bit and the Pride are capitalizing.
Unfortunately, Hofstra has also cracked 60 rebounds (61)...
6:09 p.m. Walk on Lex Mongo is into the game! Nothing else need be said...It would be tremendous to see him get on the scoresheet before this one is over!
6:03 p.m. We have reached the final media timeout as with 3:24 to go, the Minutemen are on top 95-68. With Anthony Gurley's latest three, the Minutemen have tied the school record with 15 three pointers made (15-for-26)...
What an effort! With so much going on, not sure if I mentioned that David Gibbs has a career high in points with 11 (and first career double figure game)...Luke Bonner also has a new career-high in points (15 points) and rebounds (9)...That's a ton to write!
5:59 p.m. The Minutemen need eight more points to reach 100...It would be the fourth ever game with 100 or more points at the Mullins Center, all since 2007 (within the last three seasons). The record is 102 vs. La Salle back on Senior Day in 2007 (when Stephane Lasme had his fourth triple double of the season...great memory!).
Chris Lowe has quietly had a very, very good game. He stands at eight points and 10 assists, his 10th career game with 10 or more assists.
5:57 p.m. Tony Gaffney just picked up his fifth foul with 5:15 to go in the game. He finished the night with eight points, four rebounds, and two blocks...
5:54 p.m. Tony Gaffney just replaced Luke Bonner in the lineup...Seemed fitting since they are probably the two biggest fan favorites...Gaffney hasn't played too much today, but he must be happy to have another big guy back in the middle.
5:50 p.m. The Minutemen have hit a little rut, still leading 83-61 at the under-8 timeout...Rebounds are absolutely killing UMass...Hofstra leads the battle of the boards 51-27. The last time an opponent has reached 50 rebounds was last year in the NIT Semifinals vs. Florida. The last time UMass has given up 60 was in 1989 vs. West Virginia. The school record came when Syracuse had 88 vs. UMass in 1966.
5:45 p.m. Can you smell 100 points? UMass is up 81-57 with 9:30 to go...All nine Minutemen that have played have at least six points...Looking at the box score is something. Point totals are 9 (Gibbs), 16 (Harris), 6 (Correia), 13 (Gurley), 6 (Lowe), 6 (Gaffney), 6 (Lynch), 13 (Bonner), 6 (Glass).
Just got the attendance in...3,475 hearty soules.
5:40 p.m. David Gibbs just WOWED the crowd. After making the steal, he went in and made a dunk over Nathaniel Lester, who also fouled him very hard. After a discussion between the officials, they ruled it was an intentional foul. 76-51 UMass with 11:27 to go in the half.
5:38 p.m. The Minutemen are up 71-50 with 11:50 to go...On pace for 100 points? Would be the first time this season...
The three-pointers keep on coming. UMass is now 12-for-21 from behind the arc. Gary Correia just hit his second, marking the second time of his career he has had two (last year vs. Northern Illinois).
5:34 p.m. Luke Bonner should be a point guard! Well, not really...But he has been doing a little bit of everything. He had an open three, but faked, took two dribbles and dished to Tony Gaffney who finished with a dunk (with 13:45 to go in the second half). Impressive assist!
5:29 p.m. The Minutemen keep rolling...now up 61-39 with 15:39 remaining...Largest lead was 24 (61-37), easily UMass' largest advantage of the season.
Remember Charles Jenkins? I mentioned how crucial it would be for the Minutemen to contain him? Not only have they contained him, but shut him down. Leading the Pride with 20.6 points/game, he only has three thus far...
5:24 p.m. With 17:24 left in the half, Hofstra was forced to call a timeout trailing the Minutemen, 56-35...The 21 point lead equals UMass' largest of the season...The 16 point halftime advantage was the largest of the season (the previous high was 11 set in the first two games vs. Arkansas-Monticiello and Southern Illinois...both games that Luke Bonner played!)
5:17 p.m. Less than three minutes until second half tipoff.
Some interesting scores around college basketball today...Along with the A-10 scores, #19 Tennessee SQUEAKED by Belmont, 79-77 while #20 Davidson is getting doubled up by #18 Purdue 58-29 with 16 minutes to go in the second half.
Some other games with UMass connections are set for tonight (thanks to Dave Gunn for help coming up with all these games).
I'm sure there are more games with connections, but UMass is EVERYWHERE, so I'm sure I'm overlooking something.
5:12 p.m. We have reached halftime...UMass leads 48-32. Wow, what a half...Luke Bonner has to be the story of the half. In 10 minutes, he has 10 points and five rebounds while drawing three charges. The Minutemen look like a different with him in the lineup.
Tony Gaffney ended up sitting out the final 13 minutes of the half with two fouls...Nothing wrong health-wise.
In total, the Minutemen shot 46% from the field (15-33) and 50% from behind the three-point arc (7-14). Hofstra has impressed on the boards, leading 32-17. Miklos Szabo has NINE himself for the Pride.
Perhaps the biggest stat of the half...Hofstra has 15 turnovers to only five for UMass while the Minutemen have capitalized on those 15 turnovers with 24 points. 8:30 until the second half...back in a bit.
5:04 p.m. Be sure to tune into WRNX for a VERY special halftime interview between Josh Maurer and all-time basketball great Charles Barkley...Don't miss it!
5:02 p.m. WOW...The Minutemen are on a roll...The Minutemen are now up 45-27--the 18 point lead ties the biggest of the game.
Luke Bonner drew his third charge of the game, a new career-high!
UMass is also on pace for its first wire-to-wire win of the season (never trailing)...The Minutemen had three last season (last in February).
4:57 p.m. Hofstra made a mini run to cut it to 10, but the Minutemen answered right back with a David Gibbs three for a 38-25 lead with 3:49 to go until halftime, It was Gibbs' second three-pointer of the game. It's the second time this season with two (and his career that he's had two threes--the other vs. Jacksonville State).
4:50 p.m. Luke can't miss! He just hit two free throws to put UMass up 34-17...He's now 1-1 from two-point range, 1-1 from three, and 2-3 from the free throw line...THEN he took a charge with 6:14 to go and ANOTHER with 5:55 remaining. What an UNBELIEVABLE job...Serving as a real sparkplug.
He's had to cover #50 for Hofstra, Dane Johnson, who is listed at 6-10, 265 pounds.
4:43 p.m. With 7:45 to go, the Minutemen lead 28-15...Looking at some stats, UMass is shooting 8-for-20 from the field, 4-for-8 from three-point range. Ricky Harris is leading the way with 11 points while six other Minutemen have also scored.
Luke Bonner just showed why he is such a likable guy and fan favorite. After a foul call against the Minutemen, Bonner was pleading his case, but at the end gave the official a pat on the back...
4:39 p.m. Ricky Harris just hit three free throws to get to 11 points in the game and 1,000 in his career (40th player in UMass history with 1,000 points). Coach Kellogg took him out so he could get a nice ovation from the crowd. What's something is it only took him 10 minutes for his 11 points! Already ninth time in 10 games this season reaching double figures...
4:33 p.m. Luuuuuuke Bonner (as the Mullins Maniacs chant) is on a 5-0 run! He hit a three with 12:34 to go and then tipped in an errant Matt Glass three with 11:59 on the clock...He also has three rebounds, in THREE MINUTES! It's great to have him back.
At the second media timeout, the Minutemen have their first double figure lead of the game at 18-8...
4:30 p.m. Another big final to pass along...Kansas 71, Temple 59...Temple beat top-10 Tennessee last week, so this makes UMass' win over the Jayhawks look that much better!
Luke Bonner is also into the game for UMass...He came into a ROUSING ovation...The last time he played with in the second game of the season at Southern Illinois (8 games ago).
4:25 p.m. Quick start for UMass...The Minutemen are up 9-4 at the first media timeout (15:19 to go)...An unlikely source hit UMass' first three-pointer of the game. Gary Correia his his second of the year (he was 1-11), which was the "Tees for Threes" (if you've been to a UMass basketball game, you know that after the first three of the game, one lucky fan gets a free tee shirt thrown his/her way!)
Some other A-10 scores to pass along:
4:18 p.m.Tony Gaffney with a block less than one minute into the game...Great ups by #24! Great start for the second leading shot-blocker in the country! UMass 2, Hofstra 0.
4:16 p.m. Matt Goldstein just finished the UMass starting lineups...I have to say, very solid showing by the UMass faithful...Considering the weather with students away...We're set for tipoff!
4:10 p.m. Thanks to Jason Yellin for this note...Last time Hofstra and UMass played in Amherst was 1970...Ironically, there was a big snowstorm that day as well. Two minutes on the clock...
4:08 p.m. Back with the starters...
For Glass, it is his third straight start...Also an encouraging sign is Luke Bonner, who is out with the team during the layup drill...He looks to be moving around well. Hope he sees some action today.
3:57 p.m. Some background on Hofstra...The Pride enter the game 8-1 with their only loss coming to Clemson out of the ACC. Their schedule hasn't been exceptionally strong, but the team is riding an impressive eight-game winning streak. 8-1 is 8-1...Very impressive. Will definetely be a good challenge for the Minutemen.
Unbelievably, this is only the third ever meeting in men's basketball between these two rivals, and first since 1971! Most notably, the Minutemen and Pride are rivals in lacrosse (have played n 16 straight years) and football (both in the CAA)...14 minutes on the clock!
3:47 p.m. The Minutewomen win! 80-51 victory...impressive win for the ladies!
Hofstra and UMass are both on the floor...The clock reads 25 minutes...This game is set to begin around 4:10-4:15.
3:31 p.m. I was just told it took Hofstra 8.5 hours to travel yesterday with all the snow...Left at 1:30 p.m. and reached the area at 9 p.m. This weather is definetely affecting everyone, but glad they made it safely, even though it did take a while (it usually takes 3.5 hours).
The women are dominating the Huskies ... With 3:30 to go in the game, the Minutewomen are up 75-46...Kristina Danella has tied a school record with seven three-pointers and she has 25 total points...What an effort!
There is a huge game tonight which has UMass ties. It's a matchup between URI A.D. Thorr Bjorn and former Minutemen Head Coach Travis Ford as the Rams play Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. to be played in Oklahoma City...
3:20 p.m. Welcome to the live basketball blog as the Minutemen are set to face the 8-1 Hofstra Pride...Justin Lafleur and Jason Yellin here with you...Hope everyone is staying safe with all the snow...The snow is supposed to lighten up, so hopefully you can make it down to the Mullins Center, but if not, be sure to watch or listen through UMassAthletics.com, and of course, check out the blog for all the tidbits to make the game experience more enjoyable.
The women's team is currently in the second half of its game vs. Northeastern, leading 50-36...Hopefully the Minutewomen can hold on and improve to 6-5 on the season. The team is quietly having a very impressive season which includes a win over Colorado at Colorado...We'll keep you updated on this game's progress!
Some big games of note to UMass fans...
Back in a bit as we approach gametime...
